Saying Goodbye

I was definitely operating outside the rulebook today. I spent the day with Fiona on my lap while I tended to luna in her final hours. I had to answer all those questions like, is it OK to let your child see death, is it ok to let your child see you cry, and I think that after that and more in the way of heavy lessons it was ok.

I remember vividly coming down the stairs early one morning when I was 6 and finding my Dad cradling our lab Buster, and howling with the pain of losing his best mate. I went and sat with them for Buster's final minutes and while sad, it definitely made me a dog lover for life. Thinking of all of you.

Yes, and yes.

Our culture is a little bizarre in the way we deny the existence of death- as if, maybe, if we don't see it it won't happen. We lost our grandparents here a few years back. The kids knew them well, and saw them weekly at least. I caught some grief from well meaning friends when we took the kids to the funerals, but how could we not? Better to share and express our feelings of loss- that our little ones are feeling too!- than to pretend somehow that it doesn't hurt. It is all part of the human experience.

I was so sorry to hear about Luna. She was such a sweet dog. And I think you did the right thing in being open and honest about it with Fiona. My love to all of you.
